My Approach to Family Shoots
I want family shoots to be as fun and stress-free as possible for the whole family!
For that reason, it’s totally fine if you need to take breaks for feedings or feelings – it’s a lot to have someone new in your home and space, especially after this past year!
I aim to capture a combination of candid and posed shots, to give you some beautiful images of your family smiling at the camera, as well as the playing, chasing, and jumping that happens in between those posed moments.
Whether at your home or in a public space, I like to move around to get different angles and subject combinations, and also so that you don’t feel like you’re stiffly smiling at a camera the whole time!
Logistics & Timing
I shoot almost all of the family shoots with available natural light. It allows me to move quickly, capture candid moments, and apply the documentary style I’ve spent many years perfecting.
Natural light is usually most favorable at the beginning or towards end of the day. For that reason, I aim to schedule schools mornings or late afternoon-early evening time frames. We can talk about exactly when is best for your family’s schedule.
If shooting a little one who is still napping, I aim to arrive whenever they are most likely to be awake and alert. This is often at the end of a nap window.
If it looks like it’ll rain or be poor air quality on the date we’ve scheduled your shoot, you can reschedule, free of charge. If it’s just a cloudy day, I will likely suggest that we proceed, as cloudy days can provide some beautiful, diffused light.
Image Delivery & Payment
All of my family shoots are taken on digital cameras.
After the shoot, you’ll receive a password-protected online gallery, through which you can view all of the photographs taken at your shoot.
Depending on the session you selected, you will be able to download all of the digital files, or you can indicate which are your favorites and they will be made available for download.
I will send you an invoice before our shoot. Payment can be made by Venmo, PayPal, or through check via mail.
Additional files can be purchased through the online gallery.
Print purchasing is also available through the online gallery, of you can do them on your own once you’ve downloaded the final files.
You will not be able to download any files until payment has been received.
Your gallery will be kept live for at least 3 months after delivery, in case you change your mind and want to add more images.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should we wear?
Something that you feel both comfortable and fantastic in! Whatever makes you feel like a great version of yourself. I don’t think that families need to be all matching or super dressed up. Do consider having everyone in outfits that are the same level of formality and tone of colors. I will also suggest avoiding solid white shirts (draws one’s attention) and short skirts for little ones under 3 years old (if they’re sitting down, it can be hard to cover everything that should be.)What should we have ready for the shoot?
If we’re shooting a kiddo who’s not yet walking, please consider having a pretty blanket that they can lay or sit on. If they need help sitting up, having a boppy or comfy pillow to support them is also helpful. With babies, I love it when I can use a rattle or toy that they enjoy that I can use to get their attention. Also consider whether there are any family heirlooms or gifts that you’d like them to be photographed with. How can we prepare the kiddos for this?
Let them know ahead of time that I’m coming and that it’s going to be fun! Ask them if there’s anything they want to make sure to get a photo with or wearing. Remind them that this is a special thing for your family to do together and that any photos we get will be great!Do you do shorter or less expensive shoots?
I totally understand that having your family photographed is a luxury! After a decade of shooting families, the packages that I offer are the best way that I’ve found to capture families and make sure that I get a variety of images for you. I sometimes do shorter shoots in one location around the holidays – feel free to reach out if you’d like to know about them!
